I brought Tommy to Snip Its for a much over do hair cut a few weeks ago. The place is really cute and does a great job at distracted the kids with cartoons, colorful walls and toys, and they even receive a toy after they successfully complete the whole process and your on your way out the door.
Tommy was besides himself, crying- actually I’m gonna go there, he was hysterical.
I could not understand what brought this on, because he was excited before we got there, and also he has had a few successfully hair cuts at the same location a few times and he had never had this full blown reaction.
I decided to ask the hair dresser to give us a moment. I also needed time to wipe the boogers from his face.
I asked, Honey why are you so upset? I thought you wanted to get your hair cut for your birthday party?
He sobbed and I heard a tiny voice whisper and cry his response.
I want to have red hair.
I answered, You want to have red hair? You do have red hair, it’s still red, do you want to see your hair in the mirror?
He shook his head yes and I showed him in the mirror that his beautiful red hair was still there.
He seemed satisfied with that and allowed the hair dresser to go about her business of finishing up his haircut. We finished up, got our prize and went home.
When I told my Mother-in-Law this story she laughed and re-told the story of my husband when he was a little older than Tommy. He did not like his red hair, because it was different. He told his mom that he wanted to be an old man so his hair would turn grey.
Tommy I hope you always like your red hair and embrace all the things that make you unique and different. Your red hair is just one of those things that makes you special.
Oh and by the way now it’s not only my son that want’s to keep his red hair… it’s my husband too!
